Loosen Drag for Storage. Between fishing trips store each reel with its drag loosened. If you leave the drag tightened the drag washers are compressed and you could end up with a jerky or ineffective drag. Reduced pressure on the drag washers helps them last longer in better condition.

Take your reel apart properly. "When you take your reel apart lay out the parts on a mat of some sort. Put a strip of masking tape under the line of parts and number each part as you remove it from the reel. That way you'll be able to put everything back together without having parts leftover."

Oil bearings. "Clean bearings with lighter fluid. That'll remove all the dirt and grunge from them. After they're cleaned make sure they spin. That's very important because it'll tell you they're clean. Oil them with TG's Rocket Fuel — medium viscosity — one drop per bearing. Again use a toothpick."

Line Replacement. When should you replace old line with new? There′s no set answer to that question but certainly you′ll want to replace it after any long taxing encounter with a hard-fighting fish which can compromise the properties of the line. I also replace mine after extended fishing time in waters with lots of rocks snags and other debris that can cause nicks and abrasions. And of course it′s time for more line whenever the amount on the spool gets too small due to changing lures losing baits to snags cutting off line because of “twisties” and so forth.

Baitcasting Reels: These reels work with the weight of your bait or lure as it pulls on the line and turns the spool. They are typically preferred by more experienced anglers especially when using heavier lures and lines for large game fish. Handles are usually located on the right-hand side of the reel. Most baitcasting reels incorporate a drag system which adjusts the resistance or drag on your spool and controls the level of resistance needed to pull the right length of line off the spool many anglers prefer baitcasting reels for larger stronger game fish like musky or smallmouth bass particularly if they′ll be out on the water for an extended period of time. Many saltwater anglers also use baitcasting reels for species like striped bass some baitcasting reels come in one-piece designs that lessen the corrosive effects of saltwater.
